Highlight: Kona Color of the Year
After two weeks of anticipation, Robert Kaufman announced their color of the year yesterday. It’s a bright, sunny, “unabashedly” yellow called Highlight. They posted it on their blog and instagram and they’ve also included a lookbook with several quilts made up featuring the new color. My reaction upon opening the image went something like this… what? yellow? huh. I like it!
I wasn’t sure what to expect with Pantone choosing a Rose Quartz and Serentity (a soft pink and blue) as their colors of the year. Pantone is the industry standard. They study trends and set color standards for fashion, home decor, and influence many of the products we see in stores. The thing is, their color choices aren’t always fabric friendly as far as sewing and quilting goes. I’m looking at your Marsala of 2015! Paint company Benjamin Moore chose Simply White as their color of the year, “an elegant, refined pure color that goes with everything.” Well yes, that’s true, white does go with everything. What I like about Robert Kaufman’s choice is it’s coming from within our own industry. Yes, it pushes us beyond the colors we have been using, but isn’t that kind of he point? Aren’t we ready for something fresh and new to play with? I know I am.
Not long after I saw the announcement and kind of let that crazy bright yellow sink in. My brain started to wander around it. I was thinking about if I had seen that color in anything I liked recently, what I might pair it with and what I might make with it. My daughter (who probably has more current fashion color represented in her clothing than I do!) has this cute pajama shirt from Carters. You can see that bright yellow color mixed with soft girly pastels and a navy to ground everything.
I like to play with color a lot. It’s a great way to get the creative juices flowing. Sometimes it becomes something and sometimes it doesn’t. I use a design program on my computer, but you can also use paints, pens, whatever you have available. The point is to mix it up and have fun. You never know where creative play will lead. Here are some of the color palettes I came up with using Highlight as a starting point.
How about with neutrals with a hit of cool ballerina pink?
Can olive be a neutral?
Let’s go bright!
And one last one, a sunny day with barely a cloud in the sky. I think this one might be my favorite.
Kona Highlight is a special edition color and it’s arriving at your local quilt shops right now. I’m so curious what you think of Robert Kaufman’s color of the year! Love it? Hate it? Can’t wait to use it???
* If you are a shop that has it, send me a note and we’ll make a list and help spread the word.
