Modern Applique Illusions by Casey York – Book Review + Giveaway

on Nov 13, 2014 in Books | 57 comments

Modern Applique Illusions: 12 Quilts Create Perspective & Depth by Casey York features a unique offering of quilt projects that combine applique with traditional art techniques of vanishing points and perspective to create an illusion of depth in the surface design.

I remember the first time I saw Casey’s work in the Modern Quilt Guild Michael Miller Fabric Challenge. Onwards is a striking quilt both in it’s minimalist design and in the power of a line of trees that appear to recede into the distance. I was super excited to see her expand on those techniques in her first book for Stash Books.

Each quilt in the book features some illusion of depth. Casey does a good job of introducing the basics of the technique and then delving into more subtle variations on the topic including multiple vanishing points and linear perspective

I like when a quilt project is both beautiful and teaches me a new technique. Shadows in the Grove Quilt above create the illusion of light coming through the trees. The smaller sized trees and placement on the quilt create the effect of depth.

In addition to the 12 quilt projects, the book includes sections on Materials, Applique Basics and Finishing Techniques. I especially enjoyed a discussion of quilting designs that enhance the visual illusion of depth in the quilt.

Modern Applique Illusions is a well written technique book that teaches through 12 gorgeous designs. A great addition to any modern quilter’s library.

You can learn more about Casey and her work by visiting her website and blog. Casey’s PDF quilt patterns available in the shop.
