Where I Sew – Sonja Gingerich of Ginger Makes

on Jul 17, 2013 in Where I Sew | 67 comments

I’m Sonja Gingerich, and I blog at Ginger Makes and for the Mood Sewing Network.  I work in film/television production, and love to sew garments in every spare moment!  My sewing space is the dining area in my small NYC apartment, so my fabric and notion storage, mirror, and ironing supplies can all be quickly rolled away and tucked in the bedroom if I’m throwing a party (I just have to remember to clean up all the thread bits before setting out the cheese platter!).  I love that my workspace is in the middle of the apartment, so I can work away, but still chat with my husband (and keep an eye on my two pugs!).

  1. Good girl for making it work. My dining room table would never be clean if I sewed there.
Thanks for sharing Sonja 🙂 janita

  2. Your space was my space at one time! Finally, was able to move into another room of the house, but there is still something special about my dining room sewing studio! Thanks for the memories!

  5. Not everyone has the luxury of a dedicated room; you make do and that is great!

  8. I really like working in the dining room and feeling like I am a part of what is going on. However, unlike you, my space is rarely, if ever neat–and it requires a Herculean effort if we are ever having people over. Thanks for sharing.

  9. It’s nice to see someone that doesn’t have a dedicated sewing space but still manages to create beautiful things. Work with what you’ve got!

  12. Wow! What discipline it takes to sew in these small NY apartments, yet what great work comes out of these limited spaces. may be the pugs help….

  13. I, too, like to do my sewing where I can be part of the action. When we first moved to our home, I tried setting up my sewing machine in one of the guest rooms but hated being all by myself in there. Now I’m in the former dining room where I can talk to my sweetheart, listen to the baseball game on tv, and visit with our dogs and cats.
