Where I Sew – Ashley Newcomb of Film In The Fridge
I’m Ashley Newcomb and I blog about quilting at Film in the Fridge. My sewing space occupies a third of our living room, so that I can take every opportunity to sew, yet still be with the family. My 2 year old son, Max, often plays with his toys on the floor nearby while I sneak in a bit of fabric cutting or some quick piecing.
Since I am most often making quilts, I like having my fabrics easily accessible – I keep many favorites stored in the cabinet you can see in the left part of this photo, and all my solid fabrics stored under the large sewing table. The table was custom made (a trade for a quilt, in fact!) and fits two large cutting mats on one side and my sewing machine and computer on the other. Despite the limitations of having my sewing space right in the middle of our home (mostly dust and lots and lots of threads!), I love how easy it makes it for me to sneak in a few minutes of sewing here and there throughout the day!

Having everything fits into the same table makes for more efficient sewing, would love to have this kind of space!

It is always great to be able to work and see the family!

I love your sewing space! Mine too is in the living room, but yours is much more dedicated. I love the large cutting surface 🙂

It is so fun to see that other quilters share their space with another room in the house.

I love how you make good use of the space you have. Also, how you take advantage of the limited time you have to sew.

That’s a great looking table. My sewing area is in a corner of our den, but it is much messier than this space. 🙂

Ashley is both much neater and much more productive than me! Maybe the two are combined…maybe I should get a little neater! 🙂

My sewing space is in the living room too. It works out really well to keep an eye on the kids.

I sew in the middle of everything too!

What a fantastic table! I would love to have designer wall too.

I never really thought of the plus side of sewing in the middle of the house. But I do find I feel like I can carry on conversation and visit with my husband while working in my living/dinning room. I do LOVE the custom table. Maybe I can get hubby to build me one.

Ooh, design wall! I wish I had one… yay for yours!

Super cute space. Looks very effieient.

I would love to have enough living room space to be with my fiance while I sew. Then again, there’s something about going into my sewing room, shutting the door, and just focusing on my sewing!

It is nice having a sewing space where it is convenient to other rooms of the house. I like your space.

I love your sewing table!

I love this idea of sewing in the middle of the family!

Will file away the idea of using the cutting mats to determine the size of the table – brilliant! We are slowly working on repairs to our basement, then I get half-ish for my sewing-quilting-crafting. Wishing the basement was bigger!!

What a lovely space. I am far too messy to share my space with the rest of the family.

It’s nice that you can still do what you enjoy and be a mum at the same time. Love your wall colour and pretty fabric stacks.

Love the table, but I can’t image sewing in the living room with the family around – chaos!

My first thought was “I love that gray color on the walls” lol! 🙂 The extra-large table would be great to work on too.

We are moving cross country next month and will be in a smaller house. But the living room will be much larger. I may just claim a corner of it for my sewing!

I just love everything about this room! Fabulous. I’m rather jealous of that large surface… 🙂

I too sew in a corner of the living room, and other than mild irritations, I love it.

I’m guessing Miss Ashley did this before her beautiful girl arrived last week! The space is great!

Wow, a custom table. Your sewing area is much cleaner than mine!

Just think of the memories you are creating for your family as you sew in the living room!

I think I need to move my table into the family room, i think when it’s out of sight out of mind sometimes.

So lovely, the wall color is soothing, and everything is in it’s place. By the way, your design wall is nice and large.

This is beautiful and I love that custom table! I prefer to sew in an open space so I am not cloistered away from my family.

I love how your fabric is out in the open like that! Perfect!

Her fabric is so nicely stacked. I’m very jealous!

Fabulous table – and how good to see Ashley sews in a part of her living room rather than a designated studio!!

So awesome that sewing is not hidden away!

I never thought of putting a plant in my sewing space. Thanks for the idea.

i often think about bringing my sewing room downstairs…but worry about the MESS!
View CommentJuly 11, 2013
Fun! I hadn’t seen Ashley’s space before. I used to get to sew in our living room and really liked it too. Made me feel like part of the action.

I love how she’s incorporated the space into her family area! (Sadly I’m too much of a traveling mess for that to EVER fly in my house, ha!)
