Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen is an amazing first book by two extremely talented improvisational quilters.

In addition to making beautiful quilts, these ladies know how to TEACH what they know.

The book contains 7 distinct improvisational technique lessons:

  • Free-Piecing
  • Improvisational Log Cabin
  • Slice and Insert
  • Stitch and Flip Triangle
  • Strip-Piecing
  • Modern Crazy-Piecing
  • Improvisational Curves

The extensive step-by-step diagrams are impressive. No detail left behind. All your class handouts neatly bound into a book.

Each technique is coupled with 3 projects that reinforce the concept and showcase variations.

Quilting Modern is all about mastering technique and seeing the possibilities of using that technique in a quilt design. Jacquie and Katie have distilled the science from the art and given us a toolbox to create with.

And yes, you too can piece curves! These curves are free-pieced, free-cut and require no templates. A refreshing approach with stunning results.

The spectacular photography by Joe Hancock combined with high quality color illustrations create a beautiful book that is a joy to page through and will leave you feeling inspired to quilt.

Sometimes all the elements of a book come together in such a way that the end result is nothing short of spectacular. It’s clear that Jacquie and Katie have put every ounce of their passion for the art of improvisational quilting into the pages of Quilting Modern. The quilts are beautiful. The approach to illustrating and teaching improvisational techniques is comprehensive and extremely well done. Kudos to both authors on the contribution this book makes to the world of quilting. However you define modern quilting, this book is certain to broaden your view on quilt construction and leave you pulling fabric off the shelves for your next quilt.

I have a copy of Quilting Modern up for giveaway. Leave a comment sharing what technique you’d like to learn from the book. I’ll draw a winner next Wednesday.

Interweave Press came up with a clever twist on the blog book tour. Quilting Modern is being celebrated with a weekend full of posts about the book.
