Sewing for Boys by Shelly Figueroa and Karen LePage – Book Review + Giveaway

Sewing for Boys: 24 Projects to Create a Handmade Wardrobe by Shelly Figueroa and Karen LePage is a pattern packed book full of practical designs for little boys. The book contains full-sized pattern sheets and instructions for 16 garments and 8 accessory and gift projects.

The table of contents tag line reads ‘A Year in the Life of a Boy’. It’s an excellent descriptor as the projects span seasons as well as how boys play and live. There are patterns for babies and toddlers (size 3 months up to 18 months) as well as young boys (size 2/3 years up to 6/7 years).

The devil is in the details most definitely applies to Sewing for Boys. The race car playmat has a tunnel. Well, of course it does! And there are pockets on just about everything. Pockets perfect for collecting, storing and carrying needed supplies.

As a mom of two girls I was definitely wishing I had a cute little boy to sew for as I read through the book. So much so that on the night I did my first read through I dreamt I was pregnant with a boy! Pretty crazy for a number of reasons! I woke up with a smile.

The book also includes some quick gift ideas including belts, a birthday party gift bag, and a patchwork fishing hat.

The designs are well-thought out and contain finishing details that elevate the designs from cute to sophisticated. The Out-On-The-Town Jacket and Little Heartbreaker Pants are made up in wool suiting with cuffs, vintage styling, faux fly, and adjustable waistband with buttonhole elastic. A reversible winter jacket includes instructions for welt pockets. The authors incorporate sewing techniques commonly used in ready-to-wear clothing. A refreshing approach!

As the design team behind Patterns by Figgys, Shelly and Karen stay true to their roots in delivering clothing designs that allow children to be children. Classic styling, functional design, and practical components. Sewing for Boys: 24 Projects to Create a Handmade Wardrobe is a beautiful collection of well-designed patterns for the young man in your life.
